While there are many people who put off getting their annual dental checkup, studies show men are much more likely to do so. A national survey revealed that women brush teeth more often and more thoroughly than their male counterparts. While 86% of women report that they brush their teeth twice a day, only 66% of men reported the same. Women are also known to replace their toothbrushes more often than men.
Research also shows that men who have history of gum disease are much more likely to develop certain cancers, including blood, pancreatic, and kidney cancers. Because men openly admit they don’t take as good care of their teeth, there are some ways they can be more vigilant and attentive to oral health:
- Brush your teeth for a full two minutes at least twice daily. You should use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Also, floss your teeth and use mouthwash every day.
- Your toothbrush should be replaced after you have been sick or every three months.
- Schedule regular dental cleaning and exams.
Any bleeding in your gums after you floss or brush can be a sign of developing gum disease. You should also visit the dentist more often if you use tobacco, take medications that can cause dry mouth, or play sports. Any of these things can put you at a greater risk for oral health issues.
