Understanding Dental Bonding

In times past, metal fillings were the only option, and the health concerns associated with them were unknown.  Meanwhile, patients had no choice but to cope with the obvious metal appearance of metal fillings.  Modern dentistry has correct these issues with dental bonding.  Our team uses advanced dental bonding materials that can fill cavities and strengthen broken teeth.  The best part is that dental bonding is not only safe; it also resembles your natural teeth.

Dental bonding treatments involve using a resin compound that is tooth colored as a filling.  The resin adheres (or bonds) to teeth.  The outer layers of the resin in carefully exposed to a special light until the shade of the resin mimics the exact color of your natural teeth.  Bonding is a cosmetic procedure, and our dentists can complete the procedure within a single office visit.  Additionally, dental bonding treatments are painless and affordable.  We use dental bonding to correct the following:

  • Correct cracks in teeth
  • Correct the shape of a chipped or cracked tooth
  • Fill cavities
  • Fix gaps between teeth
  • Protect teeth roots

Typically lasting between 3 to 10 years, dental bonds are excellent alternatives to metal fillings.  In fact, with regular dental cleanings, concerted oral hygiene efforts, and good diets dental bonding treatments have lasted beyond 10 years.

What To Expect

On average, our patients can calculate the time of their procedure by allotting 30 to 40 minutes per tooth requiring dental bonding.  In most instances, you will not need anesthesia (however, we will do so in cases where we are filling a cavity).  After your initial examination, we will clean the area of the bond and etch the tooth.  Next, the bond is applied and cured with a special light.  Lastly, the bond is sealed.

After the procedure, a hygienist will advise you on foods to avoid for 48 hours.  This will allow the bond to fully seal and remain unstained.  Normally, foods that are highly colored and drinks that can stain teeth (like coffee, tea, dark soda, etc.) will make up this list.  However, the hygienist may ask you about certain foods that are in your diet.  It is also of note that smoking will damage the color of the dental bond as chemicals can adhere to it and permanently change its curing.
