Three Times You Should Avoid Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth thoroughly every day has been drilled into your mind as something that’s indisputably required for your health and hygiene. But believe it or not, there are times when we shouldn’t brush our teeth. The team at Dr. Mehta & Associates shares the following information with our patients throughout Riverside and Temecula.

Right Before Eating

Acidic forms of sustenance can compromise our teeth’s security short after brushing. Following a thorough cleaning, that young layer of plaque begins regenerating itself fresh and new in a blaze of glory to once again protect our teeth from hostile substances. Eating or drinking acidic substances such as soda or juice can have a detrimental effect on our teeth. Not only that, acidic substances tend to taste disgusting just after brushing as they clash with the minty fresh taste of toothpaste, and no one wants that.

Immediately After Eating

Brushing within a half hour after eating isn’t advisable. Following a meal, saliva is automatically distributed throughout the mouth to remove excess food fragments and restore balance in the oral region. Brushing during this process can compromise it. While waiting out this 20-30 minute period, a good practice is to take a drink of water for about twenty seconds before swallowing; water is a great assistant for the balance of the mouth.

After Vomiting

Never, EVER brush directly after discharging vomit! Our mouth and bodies have displaced a large amount of stomach acid after vomiting.  Hence, it would be a bad idea to interfere with the body’s purging mechanism. As the sickness runs its course, stick to drinking water, and maybe a mint or two to help with taste and to settle your stomach.
Happy brushing! (In moderation!)
