Genetics and Dental Health

Does your genetics affect your oral health?  After comparing several studies, Dr. Michael Glick who serves as the editor in chief of The Journal of the American Dental Association believes this is the case.  Several of the studies conveyed strong evidence that suggests that there is a link between our cavities and DNA.  If you are prone to developing cavities, it could be that your family genes are contributing (as least partially) to your dilemma.

Dental concepts like these are always interesting to the dental team at Dr. Parul Mehta & Associates.  After looking over the information ourselves, here are some of the main points that we think are most useful to our patients in Murrieta, Menifee, Riverside, and Temecula.

Family Cavity Matters

Have you ever come into the dental office thinking that you have a good regimen of oral hygiene only to be informed of some cavity?  If so, you are not the only one.  We’ve witnessed patients (and heard of others) that seem to do all that they can to keep their teeth clean, but end up with cavities.

But…(you knew there had to be one)

Diet is still one of the greatest contributors to cavities.

What You Can Do

Although you can not bypass your genetics, there are some very effective things you can do to reduce your chances of cavities.  First, keep a good regimen of oral hygiene.  Since you may be predisposed to cavities, it is important to brush your teeth after meals.  So, if possible, pack a toothbrush with you to work or school and use it after meals.  Secondly, drink more water.  Water will assist the removal of food particles and increase your mouth’s saliva production (which protects your teeth).  Third, reduce your sugar intake.  If you have a sweet tooth, this may be difficult, but it is possible.  Sugary food and treats are one of the highest contributors to cavities.

The last step is to visit a dentist regularly.  A predisposition to cavities means that you’ll need more attention from a dentist to maintain your oral health.  Dr. Mehta & Associates would love to help you to stave off cavities and keep a beautiful smile.
