For a Healthy Smile Say Cheese!

Did you know that fresh cheese does wonders for fighting cavitites?  The Academy of General Dentistry confirmed through a study in 2013 that cheese is definitely good for your teeth.

For decades, scientist have understood the link between calcium rich milk and our teeth.  However, there was no substantial research concerning other dairy products; particularly dealing with their effect upon oral health.  This study approached dairy product in a unique way and found significant results.

Cheese & pH Levels

The study specifically targeted pH levels in a test group.  Why?  Vipul Yadav, leading author of the ‘cheese study’ relates that, “The higher the pH level is above 5.5, the lower the chance of developing cavities.”  With that in mind, the test group consumed milk, yogurt, and cheese after having the pH level of their mouths recorded.  At 10, 20, and 30-minute intervals the test subjects had the pH level of the mouths re-tested.  While subjects that consume milk and yogurt showed no change in the pH level, cheese eaters have a significant rise in pH.

The scientists who conducted the study believe that cheese either vastly increases saliva production (which naturally raises the mouth’s pH level) or that compounds in cheese adhere to teeth and help to raise pH.  Nevertheless, it is confirmed that cheese is a good food for improving oral health.

Therefore, the next time you are looking for a snack or topping to your net meal, say cheese!
