Alcohol & Your Oral Health

When people think of over-consumption of alcohol, they usually associate it with intoxication, hang overs, and at worst liver damage (in long-term cases). Yet, the over consumption of alcoholic beverages can have dramatic effects on the health of your teeth and oral tissues. Here are some of the reasons why.

Oral Cancer Risk

Approximately 30,000 cases of oral cancer occur in the U.S. annually. What is worst is that nearly every hour an American will die from complications of oral cancer. Alcohol plays a heavy part in these statistics. The American Cancer Society reports that nearly 70% of patients that have oral cancer are frequent consumers of alcohol. These risks increase when alcohol consumption is coupled with tobacco products. Oral cancers are often subtle and can lead to other cancers in nearby tissues.

Oral Care Problems

Studies that were held at a center for alcoholic rehabilitation, show that individual with drinking problems usually neglect daily oral hygiene habits. State of mind, drowsiness, and self-awareness all play a factor in why home dental habits decrease with heavy drinking. Nevertheless, it is important to understand that when oral health is neglected, certain oral diseases are more prevalent. The same study showed that alcoholics have significantly more cases of cavities and periodontal disease.

Drinking in moderation, especially during the holidays, is a great way to end the year and bring in a new one. It may even serve as a baby step to improve your oral and overall health as a new year resolution. Please remember that over consumption of alcohol, not only creates short term dangers.
